Barclay Academy brings together the best of all worlds in offering a high quality of education more usually found in independent schools: we are large enough to offer the fullest range of academic subjects and co-curricular activities yet small enough to know every student as an individual. Hot weather update

Due to the forecast of exceptionally high temperatures this week, we have taken the decision to implement a temporary adjustment to the school day.
On Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th June, the school day will finish at 12.45pm, except for Year 10 students, for whom further details are outlined below. Students will be dismissed at this time and should make their usual travel arrangements to return home safely. The canteen will be open as usual at breaktime but closed for lunch. Students in receipt of free school meals will be able to use their allowance at breaktime.
A reminder that Friday 26th June is an INSET day and, as such, the school will be closed to all pupils.
This decision has been made following careful consideration of the Met Office Red Extreme Heat Warning, public health guidance regarding extreme heat, the physical comfort and safety of students and staff, and the challenges of maintaining a safe learning environment during high temperatures. Shortening the school day will reduce prolonged exposure during the hottest part of the afternoon.
We recognise that an early finish may present difficulties for some families. If you require your child to remain in school until the normal end of the day, please email us as soon as possible, ideally by 3.30pm today, and we will ensure appropriate supervision is in place.
Year 10
As you will be aware, our Year 10 students are due to start their mock examinations tomorrow, Wednesday 24th June.
On Wednesday, Year 10 students will attend school in the morning to sit their examinations and will be dismissed once they have finished. We anticipate this will be approximately 1.00pm, although this may vary slightly depending on whether they are sitting the Combined Science or Triple Science paper. Please refer to your child's timetable.
On Thursday 25th June, Year 10 students will be required to attend school as normal for the full day to sit their examinations as scheduled. Again, please refer to your child's timetable for precise finish times.
A lunch service will be available in the canteen for Year 10 students. We will put measures in place to ensure that Year 10 students are as comfortable as possible during the afternoon and, where necessary, will make use of the coolest areas of the school.
Sixth Form Induction
The Sixth Form Induction programme will proceed with an amended schedule. The start time will remain 8.15am, and the day will finish at 1.00pm.
We will continue to monitor conditions and forecasts and will communicate any further changes if necessary.
It is essential that students continue to bring a refillable water bottle with them. Staff will be available at breaktime, lunchtime and change of lessons to ensure that students are able to refill their bottles throughout the day.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we take these steps to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our school community while aiming to minimise disruption to students' education.
